The best agency case studies, sorted by what makes them work

Skip the swipe files. These are five exemplars, one per archetype, and each one shows you exactly why it converts.

How to read these

Copy the structure, not the surface

Every example below is here for its shape, not its finish. Strip away the fonts and the photography and you'll find the same skeleton every time: a result-led hook, three problems, a mechanism that solved each one, and proof that it worked. That skeleton is what you're stealing, not the visual polish sitting on top of it.

This matters because most agencies copy the wrong layer. They see a gorgeous Craft Showcase and try to rebuild it in Canva, even though they have no design portfolio to show and a client with a great revenue number sitting in a spreadsheet. If you don't have visuals but you do have numbers, don't chase the showcase. Chase the Proof Machine instead and let the result carry the page.

Read each exemplar below for its bones. Then match your own strongest asset, whether that's a number, a story, an idea, a deliverable, or a process, to the archetype that showcases it best.

The five exemplars

One best-in-class example per archetype

Proof Machine. Omniscient Digital and Smartling put $3.7M in pipeline and a 12.8X ROI right up top, stated in numbers a CFO reads without translation. It ties content work directly to dollars, which is the whole job of this archetype.

Transformation Story. Work and Co and IKEA moved the app rating from 2.5 to 4.8 and grew ecommerce 4x, but the real hook is the arc, a business rebuilt end to end that no single stat could capture on its own.

Big Idea. COLLINS and NEXT Insurance paired a strategic reframe with 3x growth and a $2.6B acquisition. The idea is the headline, and the proof is what makes an economic buyer believe the idea actually worked.

Craft Showcase. PORTO ROCHA and Perelman PAC NYC built a full identity system, beautifully executed. It's the riskiest pick of the five here because it never lands on one outcome number, and it would convert harder if it did.

Method Demonstration. Grow and Convert and Leadfeeder taught Pain Point SEO so clearly you could run the process yourself, backed by 225+ signups a month. The method is the pitch, and the number proves it isn't theoretical.

The pattern across all of them

The great ones still show the numbers

Four of these five best-in-class exemplars carry Proof Machine as a secondary layer, even when it isn't their primary format. IKEA's transformation still cites app rating and ecommerce growth. NEXT Insurance's big idea still cites 3x growth and a $2.6B acquisition. Only the craft showcase skips a hard number, and it's the one example here that would convert harder with one.

That's the tell. Metrics are the universal reinforcer, the layer that makes every other archetype more credible instead of less. A narrative earns trust through the arc, an idea earns trust through the reframe, a deliverable earns trust through the craft, but all three get stronger once a number backs them up.

So if you're staring at your own case study material and you've got an idea or a piece of craft but no number attached to it, that's the gap. Go find the number before you ship the page.

Build your own

You don't need a portfolio like theirs to start

Omniscient Digital, Work and Co, COLLINS, PORTO ROCHA, and Grow and Convert all have design teams, production budgets, and time most agencies don't. You don't need any of that to publish something that works. You need a result and about seven minutes.

Read the full breakdown of the five archetypes, why they work, and how to pick yours in the agency case studies guide. Then let Case Study Lab do the assembly. It recommends your archetype from a few inputs and builds a page that follows the same shape as the exemplars above, without needing a designer or a two-week production cycle.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are good examples of agency case studies?

Five stand out, one per archetype: Omniscient Digital and Smartling for Proof Machine, Work and Co and IKEA for Transformation Story, COLLINS and NEXT Insurance for Big Idea, PORTO ROCHA and Perelman PAC NYC for Craft Showcase, and Grow and Convert and Leadfeeder for Method Demonstration. The common thread across all five is a numeric outcome tied to a specific action, not just a story or a pretty page.

What is the best format for an agency case study?

There isn't one best format. There are five archetypes, and the right one matches your strongest asset: a hard number, a long arc, a reframe, a deliverable, or a repeatable process. Proof Machine shows up as the most common secondary across the other four because numbers reinforce every style, even when they aren't the primary hook.

How do agencies show ROI in a case study?

Lead with a numeric result set instead of burying it in the body copy. Tie each result to one specific part of your process so the reader can trace the number back to something you actually did. Where you can, connect a marketing metric to a business metric, like pipeline or revenue instead of just traffic, since studies that make that connection score materially higher.
