# Discovery Call Questions for Agencies: What to Ask & Why

_The best discovery call questions for agency sales, grouped by what they uncover, with the reason each one works and the questions to never ask._

A good discovery call question does one job. It gets the prospect talking about their problem instead of listening to you talk about your solution. The best ones are open, specific to their business, and they follow the pain and the money. Below are the questions that actually work, grouped by what each one is meant to uncover.

Most agency discovery questions are garbage because they are lazy. "Tell me about your business." "What are your goals?" "What's your budget?" These make the prospect do all the work, and they signal that you did zero homework before the call. You are not discovering anything. You are reading them your onboarding form.

The point of every question is [Return on Understanding](https://timkilroy.com/return-on-understanding). The deeper you understand a prospect's business, the better you can sell to them, serve them, and keep them. A question that does not build that understanding is just noise.

### What questions uncover the real size of the problem?

Start here, because the size of the problem sets the size of everything else: the urgency, the budget, and whether you should even take the deal. You want the number, the trend, and what it costs them to leave it broken.

- **What is this costing you right now, in dollars or hours? **Moves the conversation from vague frustration to a number you can build a case around.
- **How long has this been a problem? **A problem that has dragged on for years is either low urgency or genuinely hard. Both change how you sell.
- **What happens to the business if this is still broken in twelve months? **Surfaces the stakes and whether this is a real priority or a nice-to-have.
- **How are you measuring this today? **Tells you whether they even track it, which tells you how seriously they take it.

### What questions reveal what they are actually trying to achieve?

Problems and goals are not the same thing. Someone can have a traffic problem and a revenue goal. Solve the wrong one and you win the project but lose the client.

- **What does success look like six months after we fix this? **Gets you the outcome they care about, not the task they think they need.
- **If this works, what does it let you do next? **Reveals the bigger ambition your work is really serving.
- **Who in the business cares most about this getting solved, and why? **Finds your internal champion and the motivation you can build on.

### What questions expose how urgent this really is?

Urgency is the difference between a deal that closes this quarter and one that dies in "we're thinking about it." Ask directly, because prospects rarely volunteer it.

- **Why are you looking at this now, instead of six months ago or six months from now? **The single most useful discovery question there is. The answer is the real trigger.
- **What happens if you do nothing? **If the honest answer is "not much," you have a timing problem, not a fit problem.
- **Is there a deadline or event driving this? **A launch, a board meeting, a lost client. Real dates create real urgency.

### What questions reveal how they make decisions?

You can run a perfect call and still lose because you were selling to someone who cannot say yes. Map the decision before you write anything.

- **Walk me through how a decision like this gets made on your end. **Open-ended, and it surfaces every hidden approver.
- **Who else needs to be comfortable with this before it moves forward? **Names the people you are not talking to yet.
- **Have you bought something like this before, and how did it go? **Their last buying experience tells you how this one will feel.

### What questions surface what they have already tried?

Everything they have already tried is a map of what not to propose and a preview of why they will be skeptical of you. Skip it and you will pitch the exact thing that already failed.

- **What have you already tried to fix this? **Keeps you from proposing the thing that burned them last year.
- **What did you like and not like about how that went? **Tells you the standards you will be measured against.
- **Why do you think it didn't work? **Their theory of the failure is often the real problem to solve.

### What questions should you never ask on a discovery call?

A few questions actively cost you the deal. They either make you look lazy or turn a discovery call into a premature sales call.

- **"What's your budget?" asked in the first ten minutes. **It frames you as a vendor pricing a commodity before you have shown any understanding.
- **"Tell me about your business." **You should already know this. Asking it proves you did not prepare.
- **"So, are you ready to move forward?" **That is a sales-call question. On a discovery call it reads as desperate.

### How many questions should a discovery call have?

Fewer than you think. Five to seven great questions with real follow-up beat a script of thirty. Discovery is about depth, not coverage. Ask a strong question, then actually listen and follow the thread it opens.

The questions are only half of it. The other half is showing up prepared enough to ask them with confidence, and knowing what to do with the answers.
